At its customer conference in Las Vegas, SAP announced a significant expansion of its AI agents by the end of the year. The agents are meant to complete tasks across several applications, triggered in natural language.

The German-speaking user group welcomes the direction but criticises the access conditions. First scenarios are planned for customers with older or self-operated systems, tied to moving a large share of maintenance fees into cloud subscriptions.

We recommend that companies do not treat the AI question separately from their ERP path. A clearly defined first use case with measurable benefit, such as matching payments, is a sensible start. Before that, the master data deserve attention, because an agent works only as reliably as the data it accesses.
