In May 2026 SAP declared the autonomous enterprise at its own conference. This time there is more behind the term than a vision: over fifty domain-specific assistants across finance, supply chain, procurement, HR and customer service are set to orchestrate more than two hundred specialised agents. The governance layer for this is announced for the third quarter of 2026.
The decisive building block is less spectacular but more important: a semantic model describing business objects and their relationships. Agents therefore work on documented company reality rather than on freely generated text.
For mid-sized firms this does not mean introducing agents right away. It means defining a governance logic now: who may trigger what, where a human approval remains mandatory, and how it stays traceable what an agent actually did.
